Discovering the Bijagos

A world apart where nature and culture permeate each other:

The islands constitute a particularly exceptional natural area.

Most of its islands have remained in an astonishing state of nature.

The clear sandy beaches are completely devoid of any trace of human life.

The interior of the islands is wild.

The fauna is one of the richest.

The Bijagos are also a breeding ground for globally migratory birds, as well as numerous species of turtles.

Some islands are occupied seasonally, others are used for initiation ceremonies and rites.

This is why nature is breathtaking as it is so pristine. This exceptional state of preservation of the archipelago is due both to the animist practices of the Bijagos, as well as to the island's isolation.
